Pregnancy Resource Centers
PRCs offer free services like ultrasounds and STD testings, as well as free programs to help you prepare for pregnancy and motherhood.
They also provide free pregnancy and postpartum items and can connect you to additional resources in your local community.
Maternity Home
Pregnant women in need of shelter can stay at a maternity home for free.
Different maternity homes set certain criteria for women who can stay in their homes, but they all provide assistance to help an expectant mom reach her goals when it comes to her education, employment, finances and prenatal care.
Medicaid or the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
Medicaid and CHIP provide free or low-cost health coverage to millions of Americans, including pregnant women.
Specific rules and benefits vary by state. You can apply for Medicaid or CHIP any time during the year. If found eligible during your pregnancy, you’ll be covered for at least 60 days after you give birth, depending on your state. Some states offer coverage for a full 12 months after you give birth. If you have Medicaid when you give birth, your newborn is automatically enrolled in Medicaid coverage and will remain eligible for at least a year.
Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
Pregnant and breastfeeding women can receive food assistance through WIC.
WIC provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age 5 who are found to be at nutritional risk. Contact your county health department to see if you are eligible.
The following benefits are provided to WIC participants:
- Screening and referrals to other health, welfare and social service.
- Supplemental nutritious foods.
- Nutrition education and counseling at WIC clinics.
Housing Choice Vouchers
This program is available to low-income families who need affordable housing.
It also helps the elderly and people with disabilities to afford decent, safe and sanitary housing in the private market. Participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses and apartments.
